Green coke (raw petroleum coke / needle coke) is the precursor material for artificial graphite anodes. Its hardness and brittleness require staged crushing and precise classification to hit D50 6–18 μm while controlling fines and metal contamination. The full grinding system is a combined line, not a single standalone machine. JACAN’s integrated air classifier mill solution is widely adopted for green coke ultrafine grinding for lithium-ion anode production.
Full Equipment Lineup
1. Coarse crushing unit: Hammer crusher
Used for primary size reduction of bulk green coke lumps.
- Reduce large coke chunks down to <2–3 mm.
- Protect the downstream fine grinding mill from oversized feed impact.
- Simple, high throughput for pre-crushing only; cannot reach micron fineness.
2. Drying system
Rotary dryer / air flash dryer, to control green coke moisture ≤0.3%.
High moisture causes powder sticking, wall buildup and unstable PSD during fine grinding.
3. Core fine grinding machine: Air Classifier Mill (ACM)
This is the main equipment for green coke fine grinding to D50 6–18 μm.
- Working principle: High-speed rotor generates impact and shear force to break brittle green coke. Built-in dynamic turbo classifier separates qualified powder, returns oversize particles back to grinding chamber for re-crushing, and extracts excess ultrafine fines.
- Critical advantage for battery material: Can be fitted with ceramic lining and ceramic rotor to minimize iron/metal contamination.
- Adjustable parameters: rotor speed, feed rate, classifier wheel speed and airflow to flexibly tune D50 across 6–18 μm and narrow PSD span.
- Negative pressure closed design, low powder leakage.
Why not ball mill? Ball mills produce broad PSD, massive ultrafine fines and severe iron contamination from grinding media, so they are not suitable for battery-grade green coke precursor.
Jet mill is rarely used for mass green coke grinding: high energy consumption and easy over-fining.
4. Auxiliary classification & shaping equipment
- Multi-stage air classifier: further polish PSD, separate coarse returns and unwanted fines.
- Circulating spheroidizer (optional, downstream): after green coke grinding, this unit rounds sharp angular coke particles before graphitization. It is not for particle size reduction, only morphology shaping.
5. Purification & collection auxiliaries
- Magnetic separator (installed before and after mill): remove ferromagnetic impurities from raw coke and equipment liner wear debris.
- High-efficiency pulse dust collector: recover green coke powder, maintain clean negative-pressure operation.
- Screw quantitative feeder: stabilize feed rate to keep consistent PSD batch by batch.
- Variable frequency drive (VFD) for rotor, classifier and fan for flexible parameter tuning and energy saving.
Recommended Full Process Layout
Raw green coke → Hammer crusher (coarse crush) → Dryer → Magnetic separation → Screw feeder → Air classifier mill (core fine grinding) → Multi-stage classification → Magnetic re-separation → Spheroidizer (edge rounding) → Finished green coke powder (D50 6–18 μm)
Equipment Selection Key Points
- Prioritize ceramic lining for grinding chamber and rotor to avoid metal contamination.
- Must have integrated dynamic air classifier for closed-loop grinding, critical to limit over-fines.
- Select negative pressure sealed system to prevent impurity ingress and powder loss.
- Match mill capacity with production scale; pilot line uses small ACM, mass production uses large-scale integrated ACM line.
The core grinding equipment for green coke for graphite anode is the ceramic-lined air classifier mill, matched with hammer crusher for pre-crushing, drying unit, magnetic separators and multi-stage classification. The spheroidizer is post-grinding shaping equipment rather than grinding equipment. This system can stably crush green coke to D50 6–18 μm, control PSD span and reduce metal impurities, producing qualified precursor powder for subsequent graphitization into artificial graphite anode.
