What Is the Tap Density Requirement of Green Coke After Grinding Shaping

Tap density is a key physical index for shaped green coke precursor of artificial graphite anode. It reflects the powder packing performance before high-temperature graphitization. The mechanical spheroidization process raises tap density by removing sharp edges and reducing particle aspect ratio. Low tap density of green coke precursor will lead to poor powder packing, uneven graphitization and low tap density of final graphite anode. The target tap density varies for ordinary petroleum green coke and needle coke, and also correlates with D50, PSD span and sphericity.

Typical Tap Density Specification Range after Grinding & Shaping

Target D50: 6–18 μm, quasi-spherical green coke after closed-loop spheroidization

  1. Ordinary petroleum green coke: 0.70–0.85 g/cm³ (mainstream industrial target ≥0.72 g/cm³)
  2. Needle green coke: 0.80–0.95 g/cm³ (mainstream target ≥0.82 g/cm³)

Reference baseline:
Raw ground green coke without spheroidization: only 0.50–0.65 g/cm³. After grinding + spheroidization, tap density increases by 15–30%.
Premium grade (narrow PSD, sphericity ≥0.84): petroleum coke up to 0.85 g/cm³; needle coke up to 0.95 g/cm³.

Why Tap Density of Shaped Green Coke Cannot Be Too High

Green coke is un-graphitized carbon precursor with volatile components. Its inherent true density is lower than finished graphite. Do not confuse green coke precursor tap density with final graphitized artificial graphite tap density (finished graphite usually reaches 1.0–1.2 g/cm³).
Excessively high tap density of green coke precursor usually means:

  • Over-grinding and too many ultrafine fines;
  • Particle agglomeration;
Both will increase BET surface area and degrade battery electrochemical performance.

Key Factors Affecting Tap Density of Shaped Green Coke

  1. Particle morphology & sphericity: Higher sphericity → higher tap density. Sphericity ≥0.80 is the minimum requirement to hit the above tap target.
  2. PSD concentration: Lower span (≤0.9) helps particle stacking and improves tap density. Wide PSD reduces packing consistency.
  3. Fines content: Excessive submicron fines fill voids but sharply raise BET; fines must be controlled within reasonable range.
  4. Moisture: Moisture >0.3% causes agglomeration, leading to false high tap reading and unstable test repeatability.
  5. Raw coke type: Needle coke has more favorable texture, easier to get higher tap density after shaping than ordinary petroleum coke.

Process Control Methods to Reach Target Tap Density

  1. Pre-grind green coke in air classifier mill to obtain narrow PSD before spheroidization. Broad feed PSD limits tap density improvement.
  2. Use mild low-energy spheroidization: only polish edges instead of breaking particles. Over-high rotor speed creates fines and reduces tap density.
  3. Optimize closed-loop classification: continuously separate excess ultrafine fines, keep qualified quasi-spherical particles.
  4. Control moisture ≤0.3% before feeding into spheroidizer to eliminate agglomeration.
  5. Calibrate testing: test tap density following standard tapping method, avoid false value caused by agglomerates.

Common Troubleshooting

  1. Tap density below target
Cause: low sphericity, many sharp angular particles, wide PSD.
Solution: properly increase spheroidization circulation passes, optimize upstream grinding PSD.
  2. Tap density seems high but batch unstable
Cause: powder agglomeration or excess ultrafine fines.
Solution: re-dry feedstock, enhance fine powder extraction airflow.
  3. Tap density drops after spheroidization
Cause: over-impact breaks primary particles and generates large amount of fines.
Solution: reduce spheroidizer rotor speed and shorten circulation cycles.

For green coke (D50 6–18 μm) after grinding and spheroidization for lithium battery artificial graphite anode:

  • Ordinary petroleum green coke: target tap density 0.70–0.85 g/cm³ (≥0.72 g/cm³ preferred)
  • Needle green coke: target tap density 0.80–0.95 g/cm³ (≥0.82 g/cm³ preferred)

Sphericity, PSD span and fines content must be matched together. Tap density of shaped green coke is an intermediate precursor index; it is not required to reach the tap density level of final graphitized graphite. This qualified quasi-spherical green coke powder enters graphitization furnace to produce high-performance artificial graphite anode material.
